Retribution
Jilliane Hoffman
Former Florida prosecutor Hoffman enthralls readers with
her debut novel. Chloe Larson is finishing law school when
she’s brutally raped and tortured. Her boyfriend leaves
her, she suffers terrible trauma and she changes her name
and moves to Miami. As C.J. Townsend, Chloe spends 12 years
building a career as a tough prosecutor. Then her love interest, Special Agent Dominick
Falconetti, arrests Cupid, a serial killer believed to have
raped and murdered at least 10 women. C.J. recognizes
Cupid, aka William Bantling, as the man who raped her, but
believing that disclosing this could hurt the case against
him, Chloe keeps silent, battling her demons.
C.J. wrestles with ethical issues, as her personal
feelings clash with her legal duties. Hoffman lures the
reader into C.J.’s mind and life, where the line between
right and wrong blurs. Throughout the trial, Hoffman offers several red
herrings that leave the reader wondering at the true
identity of Cupid, so named because he cut out his victims’
hearts while they were still beating. But even the
suspenseful trial doesn’t prepare readers for the final, a
chilling conclusion.
